6.25 km run in the rain

Decided this weekend come hell or high water I would go for a run as I had not done one in the last two weeks, and I would go for a decent length run.

Set out when the rain had stopped and got maybe 3.5 km before the skies opened up and it poured down again.

However in spite of the inclement weather (or maybe because of it) I did a damn good run and got to Pah Road without stopping and then had to wait for the lights, then to above Royal Oak Pak N Save Carpark before stopping for a road cross. From there it was walk/run to the Greenwoods corner shops to pick up two highlighters for the kid's school next week  and then ran 98% of the way home taking a slightly longer route to make sure it would be over the 6 km mark.

Distance: 6.25 km

6 km today - Lost on the 5

I plotted a 5 km course but managed to take a wrong turn and ended up 1 kilometre off course and had to run to get to school on time to pick up my son.

My ankle is killing me but I'll live.

I am one mile short of 800 kilometers.

5 km run today

Had a stressful day and so I was 'sent' out for a run to blow some steam off, and I did pretty well. Ran up Mt Eden to Mt Albert to Pah Road without stopping, first time I slowed to the pace was at Torrance which is 4 blocks up Pah Road. I had a bunch of stops between there and Greenwoods Corner as that is a slow and long uphill grade, but then from the shops to home which is about 1 km I ran with only stops for Traffic.

Distance: 5.04 km
Time: 32:26
Average Speed: 9.3 kph
Soundtrack: The National - Shuffled Tracks - Ending with Lit Up.

Another cross country training session

Two minutes faster than last time for my son and much less pausing/walking.

Same 'usual' circuit but also with new New Balance runners, much like mine.

Distance: 1.57 km
Time: 13:22
Average Speed: 7.1 kph
Soundtrack: Terraria Time, Terraria Time!

First non-year running.

So even though I stopped running a few days ago I will probably still go for a couple of runs each week, especially in the weekend.

Today I took Harry cross country training again, this time up Mt Eden Road, Up Landscape Road, Up St Andrews Road and then Selwyn, Coronation, Empire and back again.

Round trip of just under 2 km with loads of rest time at the start but the second half was a determined showing by the son who has his cross country in 5 days time.

Distance: 1.90 km
Time: 15:23
Average Speed: 7.4 kph
Soundtrack: I've had enough of the view, let's go home.

Running Stats for the year

Review: One year of running.

Runs = 369
Distance = 781.87 kms
(AKA 18.5 Marathons, or from my house to Blenheim via SH1)
Time Running = 79 hours, 21 mins, 30 seconds
(AKA 3.3 days or 1,585 songs or watching all 8 seasons of Dexter)
Calories Burned = 78,422
(AKA 142.5 Big Mac Burgers or 301 Magnum Classic Ice Creams)
Ilnesses = 2 ( a couple of days off to recover)
Injuries = 2 (one calf muscle, pulled twice, 2 day break for recovery)
Operations = 1 (10 day break for recovery)
All in all a successful year and while I am looking forward to a day off tomorrow I'm keen to go for a couple of runs a week from here on out so I would say that this is a success.
Tomorrow I start teaching myself to play the piano.

Day 365 - Last run - a belter

So being my last day running I thought I should go out with a bang.

I planned a 5.8 km course to the school to do a pick up and allowing for walks and crossings it should take me 40-45 minutes depending.

However, I hit my stride early on and ran up Mt Eden Road all the way and kept going to Mt Albert Road, getting much further than I thought. Since the rest was downhill from there I kept at it and got to Scout Ave (2.8 km) where I had to wait a few seconds for the lights to change and then kept running until I hit Dominion Road and Duke Street (4 km) before I took my first real stop and then it made it harder after that.  The last km I ran the blocks and walked the crossings and was determined to get to the 5km mark faster than when I ran 5 km uninterrupted two days ago.

I reached the 5km mark at 29 minutes 57 seconds.

Distance: 5.01 km

Day 364 - 1 day left - 1.7 km Up Landscape on my own

I Ran down St L's to Mt Eden, Up Mt Eden to Landscape, up Landscape about 100 metres, maybe less and then had to walk/run to the top as it's a very steep grade. I walked/ran 3 or 4 times
(I lost track) to the top and then ran the rest of the way home.

Time: 11:20
Average Speed: 9.0 kph

Day 363 - Sprint

1 km in 4:45 seconds, a fast run on the treadmill to see how fast I could go after yesterdays 5 km in 32 minutes, if I could keep that pace up I should save around 5-7 minutes, but TBH I was out of breath after sprinting along at 14 kph for much of the run.

Distance: 1 km
Time: 4:45
Average Speed: 12.7 kph
Soundtrack: Under Two Songs!

Day 362 - 5 km non stop

Got on the treadmill today and cranked through 5km and felt pretty good right up to about 3.8 km and then had to power up to do the last one km.

Feel pretty good about it though since this time last year I could not run 500 meters non stop.

Distance: 5.005 km

Average Speed: 7.37 kph

Ran straight up Mt Eden Road, took the hill in my stride and made 0.9 kilometers at the five minute mark, had to stop for rain at the 1 km mark not much further as it pelted down. I rested for 50 seconds off the clock while the rain eased and I ran back down the hill to home and clocked in a decent 2 km run at 11 minutes.

Day 356 - Cross Country Training again

Despite his misgivings my son is out with me again training for the cross country at the end of this month at his school.

Ran up Mt Eden Road and then got up the hill with a few stops, then climbed Landscape Road in parts, ran downhill in one go and then home again in parts.

A couple of stitch moments but the training is taking a good effect and he can manage further and further, even though he worries about falling again.

Distance: 1.55 km
Time: 13:05
Average Speed: 7.1 kph
Soundtrack: Those Plants Look Like Explosions, That Got Turned Into Plants

Day 355 - 2x runs - 1 Up - 1 Down

My daughter was visiting some friends this afternoon, having been dropped there 3 hours earlier so it was my job to go pick her up.

1.3 km all uphill via Mt Eden Road to get her, carrying a bike helmet and a three wheeled scooter, and then 900 meters back downhill once we reached the initial peak and ran back down.

Because was running at my own pace on the way up I made it further, faster than the downhill return journey.

Day 354 - 2x runs due to injury

Started a run with my son for #crosscountrytraining when he tripped on a manhole cover and grazed 2x knees and 1x elbow. Had to walk him home again, fortunately close to the park entrance so only 200-300 metres away...

So once I got him home and bandaged (some grazing and a little blood, buckets of tears poor thing) then I ran to the shop and back 400 meters each way.

Distance: 1.5 km

Average Speed: between 10 and 7 kph

Day 349 - 3km on Treadmill

The music changed and I sped up a little and then it was closer to a mile and then a new song came on and 2 km was in sight. I started moving the speed up and down with the music but with one good song after another I was soon at 3 km and then when a slow song came on I finally stopped as 'Every Breath You Take - The Police' started.

Day 343 - Late Run in the Dark

Don't like running in the dark but left my run quite late today and it was pelting with rain earlier when I was ready so it had to wait.

Ran to the Post Box to send my parents a card and a gift, but then kept running around the block in reverse which while the same distance and height is harder in reverse as the hill is longer and the fall is shorter, the other way the hard short climb is first then it's all downhill slowly.

Distance: 1.53 km
Time: 9:44
Average Speed: 9.4 kph
Soundtrack: Rival Sons - Pressure and Time (Album)

Day 342 - Running with son

It's pouring down but elected to run around the block and was soaked through before I got to the end of the block some 200 metres away.

Got to the steep part of St A's and took a break for the first time in ages on the block. Took three more walks before getting to the end of the course, but still made ok time.

Average Speed: 10.0 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Bitin The Bullet - Grouplove

Day 338 - 2km 1 break

Day 336 - Block Run speeding up

After yesterdays Treadmill run I did the block today and felt like I could speed up at the end and my recorded splits show me speeding up to near 12.2 kph in the last 500 metres...

No stops and a pretty good time.

I think I would like to get the mile down to under 8 minutes.

Distance: 1.61 km
Time: 8:49
Average Speed: 10.9 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Crazy - Gnarls Barkley

Day 335 - 3.5 k Treadmill

Average Speed: 10.2 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix - Ending with Fix You - Coldplay

Day 333 - first day back

So I have been running the last few days but without GPS or net access as I was on a school camp out in the bush. I was busy all day and active all day, including a day with over 20,000 on my pedometer.

Today I ran to the school to pick up my daughter from school in the blazing sun.

I'll manually add 3 km to my running total for the 2 days I was away as I was not running far but I was running loads.

Distance: 1.08 km
Time: 6:13
Average Speed: 10.4 kph
Soundtrack: Hate To Say I Told You So - The Hives (on Repeat)

Monday, 16 March 2015

Day 330 - Long run on new shoes

So my shoes have been wearing thinner and thinner for a while now as I have run over 700 km at least with them up to now, and I finally bought a new pair. I was going to see out the year in my old shoes for a sense of symmetry, what one year of running does to a pair of shoes, but after running the new ones in just once, I'm sold on better shoes.

New tread, new support, new bounce and spring in my step. Also less burning in my calves and thighs, assumable from having better shoes on again.

Gone from K-Swiss (highly recommended) to New Balance

Distance: 3.40
Time: 20:15
Average Speed: 10.1 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Red Right Hand - Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

Time: 12:05
Average Speed: 10.00 kph
Soundtrack: Marvel's Agents Of Shield Episode

Friday, 13 March 2015

Day 327 - Hard work

Despite being out every day the last few with Harry have been so lightweight I think I am paying the price. Plus have stacked a few extra kilos on and paying the price for the extra weight too.

Stopped after the steep part of St A's because app closed and needed to restart. Ran the rest of the way to Mt Eden Road, paused to cross the road. Bought some items at the dairy and ran home. 3 stops but hard work every step of the way.

Distance: 1.53 km
Time: 8:29
Average Speed: 10.8 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Mama - Genesis

Day 322 - just under 4 km barely stopping

Ran to Empire, up Coronation, back down Selwyn to St Andrews, up Mt Albert Road and all the way to Kingsway so that's 2.45 km without stopping, waited for traffic and then ran 300 meters, then walked 100 meters then ran the rest of the way home - a further 1 km without stopping.

Distance: 3.79 km
Time: 22:42
Average Speed: 10.0 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix - Ending with Mama - Genesis

Day 321 - Another Son Run

Took the lad out for another run today so all in all it was slow going but in a god way it'll be building up his tolerance and fitness like I built mine up less than a year ago.

My solo time around the block these days is around 9 minutes or less sometimes without stopping, back in April 2014 it was 11 minutes.

With junior in tow today it was 12 minutes so a good place for him to start.

Distance: 1.6 km
Time: 12:00
Average Speed: 7.0 kph
Soundtrack: 'you keep saying it's not far but it is'

Friday, 6 March 2015

Day 320 - Run with a 9 year old.

Took my son out for a run today, so it was a much slower pace and very easy to get around with him stopping every 50 metres or so, but as he has a camp in a few weeks it's probably good for him to build a little tolerance.

Distance: 1.16 km
Time: 9:52
Average Speed: 7.0 kph (yikes)
Soundtrack: 'Can we stop now?'

Day 319 - Run to school and back

Son forgot to pack his water bottle for school so after we got back from the drop off we noticed it on the bench. It's cloudy out so I dressed for a run, filled it up and ran the 1.3 k to the school (Despite a small GPS fail for 100 meters). Dropped it to my son who came out just as I arrived to the sound of the break bell, and then ran off again after being challenged by a teacher, which is a good sign.

Cleared all that up and ran the 1.3 k home again.

Distance: 2.6 km
Time: 14:03
Average Speed: 10.2 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Cult Of Personality - Living Colour

Distance: 1.27 km
Time: 7:16
Average Speed: 10.5 kph
Soundtrack: Pressure and Time (Redux) - Rival Sons

Day 317 - 1 mile no stops - very tired

Ran a mile round the block and almost instantly my legs felt like lead but I kept going and made it all the way despite being middle of the day and not as shady as I hoped.

Distance: 1.60 km
Time: 9:25
Average Speed: 10.2 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix

Day 316 - 3.6 km

Started with a GPS fail and I was going to just run round the block at 1 mile, but I ended up running three miles (once you add in the 150 odd meters the GPS missed).

Ran to Empire, Coronation, Selwyn to Manukau before the first stop, then partial run/walk to Onslow and then home.

Running in the almost dark never good though, but at least it was cooler.

Distance: 3.6 km
Time: 21:57
Average Speed: 9.5 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Mr Tembo - Damon Albarn

One of those days where I could not stop eating and it caught up with me in the run.

Day 307 - Hard 3 km injured calf

Woke up early with a cramped calf muscle - right leg. Took me a few hours to walk it off completely but then running I had a niggle in it and I could not find my arm brace so had tennis elbow pain as well. Right ankle also acting up, less than 60 days to go to one year though.

Loads of stops and just feeling generally tired today. Had an upset tummy from midday and the first time I drank more than one drink was the night before with 1 Pimms, I wine and 1 Home Brew, not a lot to drink obviously but the most I have had since having gallstone trouble and the operation and it upset my digestive system maybe.

Distance: 2.8 km
Time: 18:58
Average Speed: 10 kph ish
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with My Body Is A Cage - Arcade Fire

Day 306 - Hard and Unpleasant

Not feeling it but the rest of my day is booked out and busy so this morning it is. Lack of Sleep the biggest issue I think as I went to bed at 2:30 a.m. staying up late to finish the final missions on Sleeping Dogs the Definitive edition.

Ran to the corner and hot roadworks and had to stop, cross over and then cross back. Then ran up St A's all the way to Morvern Reserve, cut through to Balmoral Road and then did the painful climb and descent to Mt Eden Road, then back to St L's and home.

Loads of stops and the sun is in and out, the air cool enough since it's mid morning.

Average Speed: 9.1 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Pearl's Girl - Underworld.

Average Speed: 10.3 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with All We Are, We Are - P!nk

Day 304 - Grim 2.8k

Too hot today so I ran at the end of a blobby and tired out day. In the late sun, sluggish, sore, still tired from my big day out yesterday. Also just finished dinner and had the last two days of eating rubbish food but had a good lunch and dinner.

Ran down St A's but stopped before reaching the top of the hill due to the grade. Ran/walked more including the downhill parts which were also too steep in places. Ran to Kingsway and then ran/walked too much on the way home.

Slow and not much fun.

Distance: 2.87 km
Time: 17:50
Average Speed: 9.4 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix - Ending with Trembling Hands - The Temper Trap

Day 303 - early mile

Got up as soon as I woke up which must have been just after seven as I was eventually out the door at 7:30.

I am out this afternoon, seeing a film and then a concert tonight, with the sunny days chasing the clouds away I had to run before it got too hot.

Ran non stop around the block.

Distance: 1.58 km

Average Speed: 11.1 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Get Lucky - Daft Punk

Day 302 - Run to school the long way, no stops.

Ran to Mt Eden Rd and had to pause for 24 seconds for traffic to pass, then ran all of Shackleton, Dom Road, Kensington to Ellerton and the schoolyard - non stop.

Overcast but great for a run - best to get it in while you can with the summer sun.

Distance: 2.58 km
Time: 13:55
Average Speed: 11.1 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Lanterns - Birds of Tokyo

Day 301 - Fast mile no stops - pushing it for pacing

Someone paid me a genuine compliment and so I hit the road with the wind at my back, even though I was not sure a bit how tired or enthusiastic I was, I switched on the music and hit the ground running.

Got to the end of the street and did not notice, got to the end of the steep part of St A's and was feeling good, not tired. Sped up going downhill and pushed my pace as much and as far as I could and made it all the way back in a great time.

Distance: 1.57 km
Time: 8:22
Average Speed: 11.3
Soundtrack: The Very Best of Sting and The Police

Day 300 - Yes thats right. 300 days.

Day 300 in my year of running, and while I have slowed a little since my operation, I have run over 95% of the 300 days to date (Continuous (excluding one bad flu (7 days, one injury 2 days and one operation 9 days))).
65 more days until my year of running is done.
Running totals :
Distance 647.95 km
Duration 65:16:18
Calories 64829 kcal
Elevation gain 7738 m
Elevation loss 10651 m

Today I ran St L's to St A's, Empire to Coronation, to Buckley and stopped for the first time at Gorrie for traffic, then ran all the way to the Carpenters Daughter on Mt A road (2 km). Ran/walked up Mt A and the ran Mt Eden road right up to the Harvey's furnishing (about a mile) struggled a bit at the top but then ran all the way home.

I thought seriously about taking Gorrie to Mt Eden to see if I could take a short cut and avoid the hilly part of Mt A but then decided on Day 300 I had to do better than that.

Distance: 4.04 km
Time: 25:45
Average Speed: 9.4 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Home By The Sea - Genesis

Friday, 13 February 2015

Day 299 - 1 mile to get dinner and then walked back

Ran up my own street, then St A's, Onslow, Manukau Road, and stopped at Greenwoods corner.

Should have put the brace on my elbow because it was sore by the time I got there and throbbing by the time I got back home carrying dinner.

Distance: 1.59 km
Time: 9:23
Average Speed: 10.1 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix

Day 298 - hard work

Had an early but high carb dinner as we head into the second go at the 8-hour diet (we're doing it together to lose a little of the extra weight that has piled on after the operation.

Ran all the way up Empire Road, to the Drive but petered out before Manukau Road and walked several times between there and home via Onslow Ave.

Getting pain in my left arm, but it's a flare up of my tennis elbow that I used to wear a brace for but have not for a while. Need to take that up again.

More importantly good feel the Pizza and Wedges weighing me down and making the run gruesome.

Distance: 2.66 km
Time: 16:36
Average Speed: 9.6 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Lit Up - The National

Distance: 1.50 km
Time: 9:14
Average Speed: 9.7 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending on Lazaretto - Jack White

Day 295 - 2x runs but some idiot ran into me

You know what I hate? People.

(Some idiot ran into me while I was running because he was not looking where he was going, then just tried to run off without saying anything where I at least tried to inquire as to his general well-being)

Aside from that I ran a mile from the house to the school with no stops (apart from crossing through traffic).

Then had a meeting with another teacher (ugh) and then ran just over a kilometre home again via a different route, this time running all the way up Ellerton Road which is short but very steep.

Distance: 2.71 km
Time: 16:03
Average Speed: 10.1 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix

Sunday, 8 February 2015

Day 294 - 3k but run all the way up Parnell Road!

For the first time I ran straight up Parnell Road to the top (800 meters) without stopping, hard work and I was shattered at the top but still managed it all the way.

Then ran on through the streets to Newmarket stopping only for lights, but the hard out start took it's toll and was struggling nearer Great South Road and eventually stopped at the 3km mark and caught the bust the rest of the way.

Distance: 3.11 km
Time: 20:11
Average Speed: 9.3 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Wild Boys - Duran Duran

Day 293 - 4.2 km non stop on a treadmill.

Went for a run on a treadmill and set it to a constant 10.00 kph to see how far and long I could run for with no stopping and/or distractions.

Distance: 4.2 km
Time: 25:14
Average Speed: 10.0 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix - Ending with Mama - Genesis

Friday, 6 February 2015

Day 292 - 4 km run hard work doing longer runs again

Ran St L's to St A's, Empire, Coronation, Selwyn, Buckley, Mt Albert and then took first stop to fix my soundtrack which had gone a bit screwy.

Mt Albert was harder, Mt Eden sporadic but better once past Orvieto and then to home again.

No more pain on the incisions when running.

Distance: 4km
Time: 25:44
Average Speed: 9.6 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix

Day 291 - 2k run to the park

Ran up Empire, through the Drive (Stopping for Traffic), through Greenwoods Corner (Stopping for Traffic) and all the way down Manukau Road to Cornwall Park.

Slower than before but still ran there.

Distance: 1.91 km
Time: 11:53
Average Speed: 9.6 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix

Wednesday, 4 February 2015

Day 290 - GPS fail

Started off with a yellow signal and maybe 20 meters away got a failure on GPS that lasted through to the other side of the park, stopped at the steep part of St A's to see if I could re-aquire the signal but could not. Ran the rest of the way without stopping, got a great possibly best time.

Distance: 1.6 km
Time: 8:53
Average Speed: 11.5 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix, ending on With Or Without You - U2

Day 289 - Run in the rain - no headphones

Caught in the rain with no music as the batteries on my bluetooth headphones died and the charger was at home. Ran alongside the bus as it was caught in the bad traffic and I managed to keep pace for maybe a kilomtere before the Manukau Road lights gave me a pause and then after the intersection and then on Balmoral Road I lost it as it crossed The Drive, Epsom.

Despite no music and the rain and the sound of my panting I managed to do the 2 km in the fastest time yet.

Distance: 1.89 km
Time: 9:58
Average Speed: 11.4 kph
Soundtrack: Nothing - No one.

Monday, 2 February 2015

Day 288 - 2 k faster and slightly better

Ran same course as yesterday but this time with no stopping on the steep hill of Onslow and as such was approx 7 seconds faster.

Felt pretty good and was trying to even the pace out a bit more than the pushing pace from yesterday.

Distance: 1.88 km
Time: 10:26
Average Speed: 10.8 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix

Sunday, 1 February 2015

Day 287 - Quick pace 2k

Ran from BK to the lights non stop, then to the last steep part for Onslow at 5 mins per km and then slowed a bit on the hill but still came home in record time only stopping for the lights.

Distance: 1.95 km
Time: 10:33
Average Speed: 11.1 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix - Ending with Real, Real, Real - Jesus Jones

Saturday, 31 January 2015

Day 286 - a much better mile no stops!

Ran around the block, going back to my original route, trying to build myself up again, but I found once I hit the steep part of St A's I was already halfway up it and just kept going, then it's all downhill to Mt Eden Road, all downhill to St L's and then... well then I'm almost there so I keep running.

Distance: 1.63 km
Time: 9:09
Average Speed: 10.7 kph
Soundtrack: Hate To Say I Told You So - The Hives/Would I Lie To You - Eurythmics/Cult of Personality - Living Colour (barely the start)

Day 285 - hard mile

So having rested another 4 days or so I went for a short run.

400 meters and stopped.

600 meters and stopped.

400 meters and stopped.

400 meters and stopped.

Picked up dinner and then walked home.

Distance: 1.8 km

Day 284 - Last rest day

I hope.

Tomorrow it's the weekend and I'll try a quiet mile again, back where I started 9 months ago.

This is what a recovery from an op looks like.

You can see me running daily, and hitting well over 10,000 steps a day until the operation and then very slow the first week, gradually building up steam the second week and then today (since it's very early in the day).

Hopefully if I can manage a daily run again from tomorrow I'll be back to running 3-4 k a day again.

Wednesday, 28 January 2015

Day 283 - Another rest day.

The hole in my side was giving me pain again overnight and I got little sleep, so I took the day at home to rest and will take it easy for 3-4 more days.

There's not any point in rushing back to it if it hurts, so I'll wait until the weekend perhaps.

Day 282 - Back to resting

The incision on my left side is hurting now the support of the dressings and bandages have been removed and running, but not walking, is uncomfortable.

So I am going to leave it for a few more days until the weekend and then pick it up again and see how it feels then.

The doctor suggested if it was hurting - don't do it (duh) - but also that around day 10 (which should be Friday/Saturday) I should be good to go fully.

Tuesday, 27 January 2015

Day 281 - 1st Day back - 1 km slow start

Doctor's visit resulted in dressings being removed and me being cleared for light exercise, lifting etc....

So later in the evening after a late afternoon sleep I went for a small run, but almost immediately started getting pain in the scar on my right side, but none anywhere else.

With a little bit of pressure that went away, but I did have to run holding my side for a way.

So I ran to the end of the street and then back down again, making a 1 km loop on my street only.

I may need to bandage the incision on my side to hold it a bit tighter while getting back up to speed.

Distance: 1.07 km
Time: 6:36
Average Speed: 9.7
Soundtrack: I Hate To Say I Told You So - The Hives & Morning Song - The Avett Brothers

Day 280 - 7th Day post recovery

Last run I had was a week ago today and I am feeling like it's time for a light run maybe tomorrow evening if the doctor clears me after the dressings come off and am not in any danger of ripping or tearing etc...

I would think I will ease myself back into it, I have maybe 4 or 5 days to reach 100 for the month, even though that figure is arbitrary.

Saturday, 24 January 2015

Day 279 - Post Op Day 6

It'll be a week on Tuesday but I'm counting Day Zero I guess.

Still tired and a bit weary but lasting through the day a bit better each day.

Gagging for a run, feel stagnant.

Day 278 - Day 5 Recovery Post Operative

I'm really itching to get out for a run and the wounds from surgery are healing nicely, I managed to walk a couple of hundred meters in the heat of the day getting ice creams for the kids and that is enough for now.

Still sleeping 3 or 4 times a day and thankful that I have two more days off before work and seeing the surgeon again on Tuesday hopefully for an all clear.

Friday, 23 January 2015

Day 277 - Day 4 of Recovery

Referred pain has gone and I am still sleeping way too much, but at least I'm healing.

Despite never having been a fan of running I miss it quite a lot and am gagging to go for even a light run around the block would be fine.

We'll see what the Doctor says on Tuesday.

Wednesday, 21 January 2015

Day 276 - 3rd Day of post op recovery

So no much to report other than not moving much.

When normally running every day I crack 10,000 steps on the Fitbit but these days I do maybe 2,000 - 3,000 steps and just take it easy, a few naps each day too.

Back on the block next week if the surgeon clears me for a light run.

Tuesday, 20 January 2015

Day 275 - Second Day no running

First day post surgery and still bound up with dressings and TBH am tapped out and very tired, so even if it were ok to run a little, I would not get far.

Maybe this time next week when the dressings are removed and stitches pulled out/dissolved.

Day 274 - Surgery Day

Cholecystectonmy.

No running for a week until the dressings come off and am cleared by the Doctor.

This was yesterday, posted today

Day 273 - Longest unbroken run and fastest 4km

Despite my horrendous run yesterday, I cracked through it today and ran from Okahu Bay Boatyard through to the end of Mission Bay without stopping, some 3.2 km then had a 30 second or so rest and then ran the final kilometer with two more stops and got into Kohimarama Beach and the 4 km mark at 22 minutes which beats my fastest time by over a minute and a steady 11 km pace.

Fortunately it was quite overcast and shady, not too hot and running in one direction rather than running one way and then back again like last time.

Distance: 4.16 km
Time: 22:29
Average Speed: 11.1 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Lit Up - The National

Day 272 - Painful and Slow 3km

About 1 km I slowed down and was a bit tired, I assumed because it was late in the day and the dinner I had eaten an hour before. About 1.5 km I became short of breath and not long after that I was getting chest pains.

Gallstone attack, and severe compared to the more milder indigestion versions. I tried walking and bending over and running and not one of them made any difference, I ran/walked the slowest pace I have done in over 6 months and was in tears at one point.

Unpleasant.

It started subsiding a few hundred meters from home but it was still painful for maybe 10 more minutes after I got home.

2 more days and I'll be having surgery to remove them and I will have to stop running for a few days while I heal, but it will be worth to never have that happen again.

Distance: 3.09 km
Time: 21:38
Average Speed: 8.6 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Fix You - Coldplay (Irony Much).

Day 271 - 4 km great performance

A great run today, ran to Empire, up and over to Manukau, then to Balmoral, to the Drive and to Onslow before stopping (except a few seconds here and there for cars), walked maybe 10 metres and then ran all the way up Onslow to Watling and all the way to Mt Eden Road, walked across the road and then ran to the dairy - paused for a minute to buy something for home then ran the last half a kilometre unbroken as well.

Distance: 3.84 km (closer to 4 but GPS was playing up)
Time: 22:09
Average Speed: 10.4 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Borderlines and Aliens - Grouplove

Thursday, 15 January 2015

Day 270 - 6 km to work - good start - fading at the end

Ran from halfway up the street as the GPS was not finding a signal for ages which was irritating at the start, but then I ran all the way to Balmoral/Greenlane with now stops, waited at the lights and then got to just short of Ranfurly with no stops, and after that only intersections with one exception.

However was feeling very tired and a little nauseous around the 4 km mark - possibly due to low blood sugar or lack of sleep or energy or some such thing.

Made it to work in less than 40 minutes running though.

Distance: 6.26 km
Time: 38:31
Average Speed: 9.8 kph
Soundtrack: Symphonica - George Michael

Wednesday, 14 January 2015

Day 269 - Run to work - running between intersections

Was not feeling as energetic today as I was two days ago so I decided early on to walk all the intersections starting in St Andrews and then pretty much all of them except the Drive and the ones on Parnell Road. Overall I was only about a minute slower than 2 days ago but juts as knackered at work.

Distance: 6.21 km
Time: 38:17
Average Speed: 9.7 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Invisible Touch - Genesis

Tuesday, 13 January 2015

Day 268 - 2 runs early on

Slept in after the kids kept me up in the middle of the night and got a lift to the supermarket on the way to work. From there ran the 2.3 km to the office only stopping at the lights or for cars crossing in front of me. Got to work and got asked to go clear the mail as the Office Manager was not feeling great so I set off for a second run up Parnell Road and back again to add a second 1.26 km.

Distance 1: 2.27 km
Time: 12:25
Average Speed: 11 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Get Lucky - Daft Punk

Distance 2: 1.26 km

Day 267 - 6 km run to work best time

Got up at 5:55 and left the house at 6:35 and was at work by 7:15 ish.

6 kilometers and apart from lights got to about 3 km without breaking for rests or walks. Felt pretty good up until about Bracken Ave which was about 2.8 km and then slowed after Domett.

Still made it to work in the best time by over a minute.

Worst part was when a guy maybe half my age blew past me around the 4.5 km mark and I felt like stopping and walking as he accelerated away.

Distance: 6.24 km
Time: 37:51
Average Speed: 9.9 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with My Body Is A Cage - Arcade Fire

Day 266 - another great run - 4 km 3 stops

Today got to just over 2 km without stopping which was pretty awesome and had it not been the hilly part of Mt Albert Road I could have kept running on.

After Rowan Road I walked twice on Mt Albert and then twice on Mt Eden Road, making this 4 stops/walks being the least amount I think I have ever done on this 4 km hilly circuit.

One week from today I will be taking an enforced break due to laparoscopic surgery and the time need to heal (a week to 10 days). Though I am encouraged to walk every day.

So during the healing period I will walk what I would normally run to at least keep the rhythm going.

Distance: 4.13 km
Time: 24:29
Average Speed: 10.1 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix ending with Trembling Hands - The Temper Trap

Day 265 - 2.3 kms unbroken - stupid car

I had been on track for running the entire 3 km unbroken when I crossed the road, just as a car approached, I went to run behind it - keeping momentum when it stopped and pulled a 4 or 5 point turn.

Wasted 29 seconds waiting for this idiot in an empty road pulling a 4 or 5 point turn right in front of me.

Despite that break I was 2.3 km into a 3.26 km run and I was set to run it unbroken.

Wanker.

There was so much room he could have done a bloody u turn, but no he had to stop right in front of the runner obviously trying to cross the road.

Bah.

Distance: 3.26 km
Time: 18:44
Average Speed: 10.4 kph
Soundtrack: Avett Brothers- Morning Song/Grouplove - Biting the Bullet/Get Lucky - Daft Punk/Pearl's Girl - Underworld

Day 264 - 4 km with a 2km unbroken start

Ran St L's to St A's, Empire, Coronation, Selwyn, Buckley, Mt Albert all the way to Rowan Road without any stops or walks at all, not even road/traffic. That was at 2.06 km and the steep part of Mt Albert Road.

I swear the sun is out to get me though, when I left the house it was overcast and had just been raining lightly, then less than 1 km later the sun is blazing until about 100 meters from my house again.

Gah!

Distance: 4.13 km
Time: 24:32

Day 263 - 2.5 km mostly running despite the heat

Today I am pushed for time and I should have gotten out early when it was overcast but wanted a sleep in more. Then we went out for the middle of the day with the kids, I am supposed to be out for a drink with friends tonight so it fell to running in the middle of the afternoon in the blazing sun.

I was just going to run around the block but instead I kept going as it clouded over and I thought 1 mile was too lightweight.

In the end I ran up towards Balmoral in a zigzag and then back down Mt Eden Road stopping at the Dairy for ice blocks for the kids. Not sure but I think I only stopped twice and waited for traffic twice.

Day 262 - 4 km wandering route - with bad leg

Ran all over the place today - when I set out it was overcast but the sun came out whenever I hit a hill or extended uncovered spots. Then my calf started giving me trouble and I walked more than I have in ages, until it subsided and then I was good to run again, just as I gt home it went overcast again, typical!

Day 261 - Royal Oak in the sun

So there were many more stops/walks than yesterday but also went a new route, was more tired and had more junk in my system too. Had a day of eating crap and snacking all day, which also made it's way to the movie The Fast And The Furious - also more junk.

The sun was out not long before halfway which made the Mt Albert climb even harder.

But still ran over 90% of the way.

Distance: 5.80 km

Day 260 - 5km evening sun 2.5 no stops

First 2.5 km no stops except avoiding cars, then harder work running up Mt Albert Road into the sun and up hill, then along Mt Eden Road. Looking into the sun I did not see a car coming towards me until the blinker made itself seen through the glare, sped up and avoided easily but still gave me a fright.

Made ok time but the seconds half was maybe 5-10% walking, did better towards the end.

Home stretch I guess.

Also started singing along with the music, or maybe panting out the lyrics, which helped keep my mind off the task at hand and kept me running.

Distance: 5.12 km
Time: 31:21
Average Speed: 9.8 kph

Day 259 - Running the round the bays practice

Nowhere near ready enough for the Round the Bays - I mean I could do it like 90% of the people who walk/run but I'd quite like to run the length as much as possible.

Ran from Kohimarama Beach back to Kelly Tarlton's - hoping to reach the 4 km mark but the sun wiped me out and I was tired - ran 2km without stopping but then it was walk/run 20%/80%or maybe better but hard to know for sure.

Distance: 6.14 km
Time: 37:21
Average Speed: 9.8 kph
Soundtrack: Faves Mix

Day 258 - 4k running hard out to Queen

Ran 2 km without a break the first 600-700 odd meters uphill. Ran to ST A's, up Empire, up Coronation, down Selwyn, down Buckley, up Mt Albert to Hillsborough Road before I had a rest/walk.

Ran the rest of the way up Mt Albert road as much as possible and then ran over half Mt Eden Road bouncing to Crazy Little Thing Called Love - which it is impossible to not bounce to.

Right Calf started pinging again but little stops and a slower pace put that to rest. Also it's very hard to not run like Rocky with your arms extended skywards to We Are The Champions.

Distance: 4.02 km
Time: 24:30
Average Speed: 9.8 kph
Soundtrack: Queen Greatest Hits I & II & III

Day 257 - 6 km hard work

Ran to the Dairy on an errand and then the rest of the way to the in-laws for dinner, making a 5km trip a 6 km trip. Hard work in the late afternoon though, loads of little stops and walks before running again, also my right calf felt like giving out a few times.

Distance: 6.00 km
Time: 38:00
Average Speed: 9.5 kph
Soundtrack: Audiobook - The Death Cure.

Day 256 - 2km in the shade 2k in the sun - great time posted

I ran Up my own Road to the end and waited for a car to pass then settled into a run all the way up Empire and then Coronation, down Selwyn and Buckley all the way to Mt Albert Road where it meets Hillsborough Road before I walked at all. Then the hilly parts of Mt Albert are quite steep so I walked a quarter or less of that part and then ran 95% of Mt Eden Road, though stopped a few times to walk in the shadier spots as the sun was out in force, however I pushed myself to run further and longer and then apart from a small stitch just before home did not stop on the down hill final kilometer.

Switched from the Audiobook I had been listening to back to music and found that especially on the first few kms this made quite a difference.

Distance: 4.13 km

Average Speed: 10.5 kph
